Huntington Beach State Park

Today we went on a field trip to Huntington Beach State Park. We learned about the beach and salt and fresh water marshes.

At the beach we saw a ghost crab, a jelly fish, and many sea shells. Don't dig up their crab's home! That is where he lives. He'll come out and snap at you. Some friends put their toes in the water on accident. They got too close to the water and the waves got them good. When the water came up and left, we saw bubbles in the sand. One student dug in the sand and even found a crab. He tried to chase it, but he didn't catch it. It ran into the water.

The weather was great and we enjoyed seeing the Atlantic Ocean.

We also saw salt and fresh water marshes. We saw alligators. Don't throw them food! Then they will think anything you have is food and might try to eat YOU! The alligator sometimes goes across to the salt water to eat, but mainly stays in the mainly fresh water. It's mainly fresh water because there is still some salt in it. It is called brackish water. You can tell how big an alligator is by looking at the distance from their eyes to their nose. When they lose their teeth, more grow in so you better be careful!

We also saw many birds. One bird, a pink one that is related to the flamingo, has a spoon-like bill. The reason it is pink is because it eats pink shrimp. It is called the pink spoon-bill bird. We also saw a bald eagle in the trees. We saw bluen heron, anranes, storks, laughing birds, and egrits.

When we arrived at the park, the tide was low, but when we left, the tide was high. By the time we had left, we couldn't see the oysters that were attached to rocks on the bottom of the marsh. The tides go up an down because of the gravitational pull of the moon and sun.

We really had a great time at Huntington Beach State Park! Thanks to Ms. Marcy and Ms. Katie for being great tour guides!! We learned a lot!

Hello From Dragotta's Dragons

Welcome to room 109! Mrs. Dragotta's class is excited to post their first blog post of the year.

We're in 3rd grade at Conway Elementary School, where tiger pride begins. We live in South Carolina in the Outer Coastal Plains. We love school because it's a no bully zone!

We've been learning about the 6 regions of South Carolina and tomorrow we'll visit the Coastal Zone.

The Coastal Zone is beside the Atlantic Ocean. There's lots of sand here because of the beaches. You might be able to find fish bones or sea shells there. We learned that the Yemmassee Native Americans lived in the Coastal Zone near the Savannah River basin. They were pushed south into Georgia back when explorers were first coming to America.

We'll take pictures of our field trip and post them next week!

From Mrs. Dragotta's Class,

Have a terrific Thursday!
